TUFUGA EFI is a Samoan politician who holds the position of O le Ao o le Malo, ie head of state of Samoa since 11 May 2007. He was elected on 16 June 2007 by Parliament a term of five years as mandated by the Constitution of 1962.1 He replaced the king Malietoa Tanumafili II who held the position until his death. In 2012 he was re-elected unopposed.
Previously he was Prime Minister of Samoa twice. The first time the March 24, 1976 to April 13, 1982, replacing Tupua Tamasese Lealofi IV held the position on an interim basis. In turn it was succeeded by Va’ai Kolone. However Kolone was forced to resign and Efi reoccupied the post from 18 September to 31 December of that year. Efi’s government also fell and was replaced by Tofilau Eti Alesana.
