Rapeseed or canola, scientifically known as “Brassica napus” is a cultivated family of brassicas, there being a very popular variety called rapeseed plant. It is grown worldwide to produce animal feed, vegetable oil for human consumption and biodiesel. The main producers are the European Union, Canada, the United States, Australia, China and India. In India occupies 13% of arable land.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, rapeseed was the third largest source of vegetable oil in 2000 after soybean and palm, besides the second world source of protein food.
